CITIZEN PETITION AGAINST THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE LEON COUNTY LANDFILL
JANUARY 2004
We,
the undersigned citizens of Leon County, express outrage that the Leon
County Landfill is still accepting Class I (household garbage).
Furthermore, we feel the Leon County Board of Commissioners has allowed
Waste Management Services to continue business as usual instead of
transitioning from dump to park as was planned and scheduled to occur
over a decade ago. We demand the following changes be made and promises
kept:
- Keep the collection dumpster bin available as our community is used to having for the public use, but immediately cease burying Class I (household garbage) waste
at the Landfill. Send it to the Transfer Station, to be shipped out of
town, just as is done for all other publicly accessible collection
centers.
- Immediately start the process to cap and close the Class I waste heap "cells" to begin the transition to the closing.
- Stop the methane and garbage smells and fumes from leaving the Landfill - spend the money and get the job done properly and make sure that ALL hazardous wastes are also properly managed without danger to local residents!
- Start the beautification of the Landfill and surrounding area by planting attractive plants and landscaped berms
tall enough to create a sound and visual barrier, so that any remaining
Class III (construction & demolition) waste is no longer visible
from Apalachee Parkway Hwy 27.
- Seek and purchase a new area for Class III wastes away from our heavily populated area so the planned park can be fully implemented as soon as possible.
